This past weekend, Oct 9-11, Steve Martin's Midwest Classic Racers hosted their Fall Pavement Nationals at Jones M40 Speedway, Jones Michigan. It was scheduled to be a three day event with Friday as an open practice session and hog roast. Friday’s weather left a lot to be desired with cold rain and wind so I'm not sure how much socializing went on. Lee and I drove up for Saturday and Sunday events, Friday was set aside for qualifying and heat races.
Twenty three cars made the final haul of the season with two cars coming from Vermont, Dave Gyger and Eric Hall, two real nice guys and serious Dwarf car racers! K.D.Kneodler drove up from Tennessee joining Butch Schnable from Illinois and Bob Bayse up from Bradford Ohio, to join in on the fun. The rest of the field from all over Michigan formed a great group of dedicated racers from a wide range of the country.
The weather was dry but cold, with a stiff breeze on Friday when the heat races got under way with a full field of local Stock Cars, Mini Cups and Late Models joining the Dwarfs doing their thing in the 50 degree temps. MCR put on three heat races that warmed up the fans and got their attention as well.
With the field set, Sunday afternoon brought dry sunny weather with a little less wind but temps only in the upper 40’s. Racing got underway at 3pm with the Mini Cup 40 lap feature. After multiple attempts to get the race started they finally got it going, but Lee and I were a bit bored and ready for some excitement for sure.
The MCR Dwarf's came next and let me tell you they took no time in getting the attention of the fans at this top notch 3/8th mile oval. As they warmed up, the MCR announcer took over and added a lot of info about the cars and drivers and the current MCR point battle going on for the club Season Championship and Rookie of the year titles, both up for grabs depending on Sunday's outcome. This made for an interesting mind set with the fans and got them into it even before the green flag flew. I overheard some folk's behind us discussing their amazement that there were guy's there from VT and TN, one commented that they must pay pretty darn good! LOL.
Now it's race time and the 23 die hard Dwarf racers were lined up and ready for action! After a lap for the fans to wave to the drivers the flagman let the green flag go and it was on for sure! Lee and I have seen these wonderful little cars do their thing for years and years now but we're still always amazed and excited at what we see at these races and this one was no exception. This group took charge of the high banks right from the start and had the crowd coming out of their blankets and sitting on the edge of their seats from lap one.
The pace was blistering with wheel to wheel action from the front to the rear. I don't have access to lap charts so I won't even try to write a play by play but let me tell you it was a barn burner!!!! A couple of cautions for normal bumping and spinning and the rest was a pure adrenalin rush for all involved. Slicing & dicing started after about lap 22 of the 30 lap event and only added to the excitement as late race leader, MCR veteran, Jon Wylie led the way with Craig “The Kid” Curtis all over him like white on rice. A few laps from the end Wylie got tagged and spun going into turn 4 by a hard charging Landon Hidy trying to go from fourth to first. Hidy owned up to the incident being his fault which gave Wylie his spot back at the front for the final restart. Wylie held on to the lead claiming the victory over Curtis, who clinched the overall championship for "2009"
The crowd as well as Lee & I were pumped, these car set a blistering pace that average 100 mph plus from start to finish with the outcome in doubt until the checkered flag flew. Watching was well worth the trip and price of admission. If you were not there I hope this little review helps you understand what a great event this was, and if they do it next year you should put it on your schedule for sure.
Good job Steve and all the guy's who mad this event one to remember!!

Basye Scores Win In 2009 Evans-Hostetler Classic at Shady Bowl
By Shawn Sell
The third annual Evans-Hostetler Dwarf Car Classic is in the books and Covington, Ohio speedster Brandon Basye was the big winner as he outlasted a fine field of 26 cars to capture the $450 first prize. The event pays tribute each summer to Max Evans and Bill Hostetler, two pioneers in Ohio dwarf car racing.
The 25-lap main event was marred by two lengthy red flag periods including one on the race’s first counter following a six-car melee in turn two. KD Knoedler and Brad Damewood brought the 20-car field to the green, but coming off of turn two John Bailey, making the haul all the way from Sarasota, Florida spun from his sixth place starting slot. Jerry Damewood then plowed into Bailey, setting off a chain of events that ultimately eliminated both drivers along with Evans, Bob Basye, Stephen Bobek, Troy Hoffman and Dave Wylie. (Click here for complete details and race results)
The OVDCA would like to thank Shawn Sells, his father and all the racers that made the trip in support of the event. The race would also not have been possible without the support of the following event sponsors: Damewood Enterprises (Urbana), Dingeldine Trucking (Urbana), Extreme Motorsports (Zanesville), Fifth Third Bank (Urbana), Hill and Hamilton Insurance (Bellefontaine), The Ohio Caverns (West Liberty), People’s Savings and Loan (West Liberty) and Piqua Transfer and Storage.

In just 7 days, (Sat. Aug. 22nd) the OVDCA will host the third annual Evans Hostetler Classic intentional at Shadybowl Speedway.
This is our biggest event of the year with drivers from Michigan. Indiana. and Illinois, invited to compete for honors, prize money and a great time, all the while honoring two of our favorite and most experienced (oldest) and only remaining original club members.
This is always been a really fun event with all drivers competing hard but with respect to all the other racers, it's come to my attention that the past two years were won by a driver from Michigan! Eric (hot shoe) Hoffman winning in 2007 and Craig (the Kid) Curtis taking the top honors last year!
As loyal Buckeyes we can not allow this to continue. We need to regain the Buckeye pride in 2009.
I urge all members to attend this event to help support our club and Dwarf cars in our area in general. We have arranged for a nice purse that rewards all drivers for their effort. We will pay a minimum of $120 to the top 20 cars and $100 per car for those that may have trouble and not make the main event.
Even if you think that you can't compete with the fastest cars there's plenty of driving and cash to make it worth your while to attend. You will race a heat race and at least a B-main and receive a decent purse as well.
In order for this to be a success we need everyone to contribute so please mark your calendar and plan t have a great time.
As an added bonus Shadybowl will also be racing the school buses this night, a wild and crazy thing to see, so bring along mom and the kids, they'll have a ball.
Good racing & Good times

Proposed motor rule change for 2010
Some discussion is ongoing regarding possible “2010” motor rule changes. The purpose of this rule change proposal is meant to reduce cost and level the playing field for all members. As a club we need to entice new membership with an affordable and fair racing program while maintaining our current members!!
Option A Limiting injected motors to stock 1000cc 4 cylinders, 4 cycle motors at least two years old or older. These motors must be ran stock, as they came off the bike. No carburetion can be added to motors that originally came with Fuel Injection. After market Electronics may be used to allow new fuel mapping to correct for the air box and exhaust changes necessary to put these motors in Dwarf Cars.
Stock displacement water cooled motors up to 1200cc will be permitted, aftermarket ignition and carburetion allowed.
Air cooled motors mfg, prior to 1989 will be allowed to compete up to 1250cc.
So, as to not create a hardship on anyone, any current 2009 member with a built 1200cc motor may ask to “Grandfather in” their current motor for an additional (1) year. The member must be an active, current member at the close of the 2009 season and must apply to the Board of Directors for exclusion at the end of the 2009 season. They must allow for the inspection and marking of any exempted motor and will not be allowed to transfer said motor to another OVDCA member, or replace it with a similar type motor.
1000cc FI motors are readily available at a reasonable price and can be purchased for less than the cost of re-building the current modified 1200cc motors.
OPTION B Same Injected rules as above, but allow the modified motors as our rules are currently written
OPTION C Other; Current members are encouraged to submit their ideas to the board members
We will be taking membership input on these rules thru the Second race of the season.
Voting will be at the Third Saturday race of the season or by e-mail if you’re not able to attend.
If you would like an e-mail of the new proposals or the membership inputs please provide your e-mail address to Jack VanDyke jv@columbus.rr.com or Rob Dutra rdutra@woh.rr.com or any board member.

ATTENTION ALL DRIVERS OVDCA rules meeting is scheduled to coincide with our spring pre-season tech inspection on Saturday March 14th. The meeting will be held at Dingeldine Trucking, Urbana Ohio starting at 9:30am. The safety/tech inspection will begin after the rules meeting. All members should try to make this date.

10 Jan 09
The weather forced all but the most hardy to stay in the comfort of their homes today causing the OVDCA to re-schedule their winter rules meeting planned for Saturday January 10. The new meeting will be scheduled to coincide with our spring pre-season tech on Saturday March 14th. The meeting will be at 9:30 AM at Dingeldine Trucking, Urbana Ohio and followed by the safety tech. All members should try to make this date to allow time for inspections prior to opening night. All current OVDCA rules and regulations will remain in effect at this time.
We do not expect any major rule changes prior to the start of the 2009 season that would cause any additional cost or force any changes in the cars.
Some discussion is ongoing regarding possible “2010” rule changes. A proposal will be made to change the motor rules limiting motors to stock 1000cc 4 cylinders, 4 cycle motors at least two years old or older. These motors must be ran stock, as they came off the bike. No carbs can be added to motors that originally came with Fuel Injection. After market Electronics may be used to allow new fuel mapping to correct for the air box and exhaust changes necessary to put these motors in Dwarf Cars. Air cooled motors mfg, prior to 1989 will be allowed to compete up to 1250cc.
So, as to not create a hardship on anyone, any current 2009 member with a built 1200cc motor may ask to “Grandfather in” their current motor for an additional (1) year. The member must be an active, current member at the close of the 2009 season and must apply to the Board of Directors for an exclusion at the end of the 2009 season. They must allow for the inspection and marking of any exempted motor and will not be allowed to transfer said motor to another OVDCA member, or replace it with a similar type motor.
This rule change proposal is meant to reduce cost and level the playing field for all members. 1000cc FI motors are readily available at a reasonable price and can be purchased for less than the cost of re-building a current 1200cc motor.
When viewing our "Tentative" race schedule for 2009 please note that there are several back to back Friday and Saturday dates in April & May. Shadybowl added them because of the number of races lost, due to rain outs, during this time of the year. Friday nights have been added in order to try to get in as many races as possible, if we run on Friday and it rains out Saturday no big loss. If we are able to race both nights there will be separate payouts but only your best nights finish will count toward the championship points. (Points from one night or the other will be awarded, not heat points from Friday and feature points from Saturday). We will be working with Steve Martin in order to add a couple additional races with MCR and will announce those dates at a later time.
If there is anything you'd like the Board to discuss, or think about, please contact one of us and we'll pass it around. Till then, make plans to have your car ready for the spring inspection and get ready for another exciting summer of racing fun.

& the OVDCA Board of Directors

As the Holiday season comes to a close it's time to look forward to the new year, and in particular the 2009 racing season with the OVDCA. Our annual rules meeting is scheduled to be held, Saturday, Jan. 10th at 10:30 AM at the Pilots lounge at Urbana Airport. All current members, prospective members, and past members are urged to attend this meeting. We will review several things from the 2008 season, offer up possible rule changes for discussion and voting, nominate and vote on officers and board members to represent the club for the new season, and discuss ways to reduce cost and increase activity within our group and Dwarf Car racing in general.
At this time we do not have a schedule for the New Year but hope to have a little better handle on it by meeting time. Please plan on attending this meeting and bring along your positive thoughts and suggestions on how we might improve our sport.
We are proud to announce that 2009 marks the 15th year of the Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association as an active group, with the common goal of racing Dwarf Cars, in a safe, affordable and friendly way, with an emphasis on "Family participation" We've been very successful at this in the past and need to continue to improve as we move forward. The current economic situation of the country, and the world over, is a concern to everyone, and we need to address various ways to maintain or reduce cost so as to allow us to continue enjoying what we love to do. Your positive thoughts and suggestions re: ways to achieve this goal are sought and needed.
