(September 29) Tire Update from OVDCA Race Director Jack Van Dyke:

FYI, I received a call to today from Chuck Vore ( Shady Bowl tire man ) and he informed me that he has received an unexpected delivery of the "New" Goodyear Dwarf Car tires. These tires were not expected before spring and several guys have been running on very thin tires already, hoping to hold out till spring. If you need tires you may want to get them now while available. Chuck only received 50 tires so if you're going to be needing some, don't delay. You can contact Chuck @ 937-882-1273 or 937-308-3480  Please pass this info along to all you know as I don't have e-mail addresses for everyone.   Also I hope to have additional details re: the Oct 20th and 21st. race at the Bowl, and will be notifying everyone by next week.

(September 26) It was a special night at Shadybowl Speedway this week when long-time OVDCA member Max Evans spear-headed a drive to collect funds to help with the continuing medical cost of a 15 year-old, local West Liberty girl, Jenna Hoststler. Jenna suffered a swimming accident two years ago that left her paralyzed from the neck down. The family does have some insurance but not near enough to cover the enormous cost of treatment and rehabilitation. Raffle tickets for a hot air balloon ride were sold, rides in the pace car were sold and drivers from all classes passed helmets through the stands and the pits. Early accounts show that over $2800 was raised at the track, and several thousand more has been pledged to the Jenna Hoststler fund at Peoples Savings and Loan, West Liberty Ohio in the last few weeks since Max has taken the lead in helping this family. Anyone able to help with this cause can send what ever you can afford to, The Jenna Hoststler fund, C/O The Peoples Savings and Loan, PO Box 703 West Liberty Ohio 43357 God bless and thank You in advance for any and all help you may give to this cause and to all the drivers and fans that made this a great event.

The OVDCA will end the season with a three day event at the Bowl Oct 19-20-21st.

(September 19) The weather was cool and clear and made for a very fast track as the OVDCA Dwarf Cars put on the best show of the night at Shady Bowl Speedway on September 15th.  Urbana's Jerry Damewood was the early leader as the pack got under way, current points leader Brandon Bayse made his move to the front on lap two, followed closely by his Uncle Bob Bayse and the show was on with passing and challenges every lap and in every corner, one caution allowed the group to bunch up with seven laps to go and the show got better. London Oh. youngster, Corey Barcus was charging from his twelfth place starting position to make a challenge for the front and putting on quite a show, meantime Bob Bayse was working over Brandon at every corner, trying high, then low and all over him like a cheap suit and made the final squeeze to take the lead on lap 18. At the flag, with lapped traffic in front of them the top three cars crossed the finish line within one half car length of each other. It was Bob Bayse winning his second of the year, Brandon second by one foot over Corey with a lapped car between the two, what a finish.

The OVDCA Dwarf Cars will return to the highbanks of the Bowl next Sat Sept 22nd.

(September 5) It may have been the start of football season, but the racing action was in mid-summer form at Shady Bowl Speedway as six divisions of stock cars tackles the oval.  West Liberty’s Daniel Wirick dominated the action in the 20 lap feature to post his second win of the season behind the wheel of his Wirick Farms sponsored truck. The high school football star was chased across the finish line by Brandon Bayse, Bob Bayse, Wayne Fitzpatrick and Max Evans. Brandon Bayse and Evans posted heat wins.  Click HERE for updated OVDCA points.

(August 25) The OVDCA race scheduled for this evening at Shady Bowl Speedway was cancelled due to rain.

(August 12) "Thanks to the OVDCA for allowing me to race with the group last Saturday. I had a great time and hope to be able to get back before the season ends. I really appreciate the efforts of Jerry and Brad Damewood, Max Evans, Bill Hostetler, and Rob Dutra for providing cars for me to drive and work on a little. As you all know, it is difficult enough to field your own car, let alone an extra one for a guest driver.  For those of you who did not make the "Test and Tune Session" on Friday night or the races, I hope to see you next time.  A Special thanks to Jack and Lee for their selfless work in organizing a super program.  I am especially proud of my plaque and event t-shirt. You guys are a first class crew. No wonder Charlie Stapleton speaks so highly of the OVDCA. It has been many years since I drove a Dwarf Car. However, I assure you, if I lived anywhere near the area, I would be a full time participant in your group. Hope to see you again soon."

(August 4) The Ohio Valley Dwarf car main was once again won by Bradford's Brandon Bayse in his Stoops sponsored coach. Bill Hostetler was second, with Bob Bayse third, last week's winner Daniel Wirick fourth and a strong finish for Corey Barcus taking the fifth spot.

(July 28) A large crowd remained in the stands for the last race of the night when the Ohio Valley Dwarf Cars took to the track for their feature event, and they were not disappointed. The pace was extremely fast from the start, a single caution on lap 5 when (R) Paul Lemaster and Jerry Damewood got together and Jerry was forced to the pits for the night. The restart found defending champion Brandon Bayse leaping to the lead, and chased by his Uncle Bob Bayse, (R) Daniel Wirick, and the ageless Bill Hostetler and Rob Dutra, all cars were trying lap after lap to improve their position and the pace was furious. Rookie Daniel made his move with three laps to go and shot past both Brandon and Bob Bayse to take the lead and capture his first feature win and giving the Shadybowl fans a very exciting race. Congratulations to Daniel for a well driven race.

(July 14) Good weather was the order of the day for the OVDCA Dwarf Cars, with several drivers off for vacations the car count was low but the racing was fast and furious, giving the fans a lot of excitement. The veteran Bill Hostetler was the car to beat as usual, closely followed by his grandson, Daniel Wirick, in his first full season Daniel has stepped up his program and shows he will be a serious challenge on any given night. We welcome newcomer, Paul Lemaster, making a switch from dirt to asphalt and doing a good job his first time out.

A big "Great Job" goes to 2006 defending champion Brandon Bayse, who also races a late model this year, for his third place finish in the 75 lap Late Model Pepsi challenge, Brandon lead for 63 laps before lapped traffic took it's toll and he was shuffled back to third, - good Job Brandon

(July 1) There was definitely a full moon this week as the night started out crazy when a broken front steering, forced Chad Kennedy into a hard right turn, collecting Don Boger and sending them both into the turn one wall, and this was in hot laps!! Heat one wasn't much better when Daniel Wirick got up onto the rear of Max Evans on the last lap of heat one, locking bumpers and causing both cars to spin and Daniel doing a slow roll over in turn three, all drivers were ok. The main event was a complete opposite with the group going green start to finish and putting on a good show for the fans. A blistering pace was set from the start and several lead changes were made, but in the end it was Bradford Ohio's Bob Bayse that was able to maintain the blistering pace to capture the win with distance to spare!

(June 17) The High banks of Shadybowl was the scene for action when the OVDCA met for a regular season event, with vacations starting and a few cars not running from mechanical woes the car count was down, but the action was hot. Close fast and equal competition gave the fans what they were looking for. Rookie Daniel Wirick stepped up to win his first heat race in style, while veteran driver Bob Bayse got the job done in heat two. The ageless Bill Hostetler captured the main event but not without some serious challenges from Bob and Brandon Bayse, Daniel Wirick captured a nice fourth place followed by the familiar #7 of Max Evans to round out the top five.

(June 10) Shady Bowl Speedway played host to the first Evans-Hostetler Classic Dwarf car race Saturday (6/9). The event saw a full field of the scaled down racers take to the three-tenths mile oval, providing fans with fast and close racing. Perfect weather, nice people and fast cars set the tempo for the race, which attracted entrants from across the Midwest and Florida. The OVDCA would like to thank Shady Bowl promoter Charlie Stapelton, his staff, and all the sponsors that helped to make this a very special event.

The first heat race, sponsored by Peoples Saving & Loan and Norman Racing Products saw Bob Bayse finishing first.  The Ohio Caverns and Joes Can Do Auto Service sponsored the second heat, with the win going to Jeff Slayton. The third heat was backed Dingeldine Trucking and Piqua Transfer and Storage, with Wayne Fitzpatrick winning. The 20-lap feature saw Brandon Bayse break out front on lap two, after Rob Dutra led the first counter. Bayse seemed to have the race well in hand, as he took the halfway challenge award sponsored by Damewood Enterprises and Extreme Motorsports. Trouble loomed ahead for Bayse however as his car began to smoke with five laps to go. Grand Rapids MI driver Eric Hoffman had been making his way to the front from his seventh place starting spot and caught Bayse on lap 21. Hoffman then put his Wiley Racing racer in front to lead the final laps to claim his first ever Shady Bowl win. Bayse held on for second, followed by Slayton, Bob Bayse and Dutra.

(June 6) OVDCA members are eagerly awaiting this weekend's Evans-Hostetler OVDCA Classic at Shady Bowl Speedway.  Club founder Greg Watson shared these thoughts on the two gentleman being honored by this race:

"Without Max Evans and Bill Hostetler, I doubt the OVDCA would even exist today - certainly not in the healthy and growing state the club currently enjoys.  Racing by its nature is a selfish pursuit, as we pour our time and money into an effort to compete and win against others.  Max and Bill, on the other hand, have willingly and repeatedly spent their time and money to help others for the benefit of the club and their fellow racers. Although they would be embarrassed if I mentioned specific examples, it would be fair to say nearly every member of the OVDCA over the years has benefited from their generosity, wisdom and leadership.  As the years go by it's harder to remember specific races or finishing positions, but I'll always remember and appreciate the time that I spent with Max and Bill."

Please plan to visit Shadybowl Speedway's super fast, 3/10 mile high banked oval on June 9th to honor the contributions of Max and Bill. ( Rain date June 23. ) The event will be an open event to all "Classic Dwarf Cars" from the OVDCA, MCR and BIDCA (non members of the three clubs mentioned above must meet "2007" OVDCA rules).

(May 29) An update from this weekend's race action from Jack Van Dyke, OVDCA Race Director - "The first of two scheduled Great Lakes Asphalt Series races at Plymouth Speedway, was a hard fought battle between the racers, track officials and "Mother Nature" The showers kept coming all afternoon forcing the track crew to dry the race surface several times in order to get in practice, qualifying and the "B" main. Another couple of battles with the rain gods and the decision was made to cancel the heat races and try to go directly to the main event in order to complete the event between rain showers. After a lap two caution and clean up the cars were once again lined up to restart and the rains returned. One last attempt to dry the track was quickly made before throwing in the towel for the evening. At this time it looks as though this event will become a double header on July 28th, when the second leg of the GLAS is scheduled at the Plymouth facility. A big thanks to all twenty eight racers, who traveled to the race with the weather being a threat the whole day. Thanks to Steve Martin of MCR for spear heading what looked to be a great event and to Vicki Schnabel of BIDCA and her members for their effort and support of Asphalt Dwarf Cars in the Midwest, and I'm very proud of the ten OVDCA members that made the trip as well. Scheduling conflicts will not permit the OVDCA from participating in the second GLAS and the make up feature, but we want to wish the others well and sincerely hope they have better weather and a great event. For further information please watch for updates at midwestclassicracers@comcast.net or bidcaracing@aol.com.  A special thanks for effort go to track promoter Bob Blount and his crew for a great facility and a strong effort to try to make this race happen."

(May 20) It was cool and dry for the Dwarf Cars on the high banks of Shadybowl, the action was fast but marred by a several cautions for spins, one for Four time champion Bill Hoststler when his clutch failed, and a lengthy red flag for an oil spill when Rob Dutra's Suzuki sprang a leak in an oil line. When action resumed it was 2006 Co-Champion Brandon Bayse with the win. Heat wins went to Corey Barcus and Wayne Fitzpatrick.

(May 13) The weather was perfect for racing allowing the OVDCA to complete their second event of the season after being rained out four times this spring.  Heat #1 was the Crown Jewel for London Oh. youngster Cory Barcus, as he set his #C-7 coupe on a winning path and fought off a hard charging Brad Damewood to capture his first and long awaited first win, "Good Job Cory". Heat #2 was the "2006" Co-Champion Brandon Bayse all the way after "Blasting" out to an early lead and never being challenged.

The Main event was a classic bumper bender/ battle of champions with four-time OVDCA champion Wayne Fitzpatrick leaping to the lead on the backstretch of lap one, and being chased hard by Bob Bayse, after a caution about lap 13 the field was tightly packed and the pace picked up to a fever pitch with four-time OVDCA champion Bill Hostetler passing Bayse and gluing himself to Fitzpatrick, pressing him hard at all four corners of the track. The Covington Ohio duo of Bob and Brandon Bayse followed close behind, leaving the fans setting on the edge of their seats. Fitzpatrick was able to claim his first win of the year with Hostetler rubbing the paint off his bumper at the finish line.  All cars were weighed and put through the hoop and the top three main event winners were teched for engine displacement after the event.

The idea for the race was a result of a conversation at last year's banquet between Shady Bowl track photographer Earl Issacs and several club members. Issacs agreed to be the first sponsor of the event, named after two of OVDCA's hardest working and most influential members, Max Evans and Bill Hostetler.  The goal is to create an annual event that will recognize the many contributions that these two men have made to the dwarf car racing community.  Shadybowl's super fast, 3/10 mile high banked oval will be the site of the event on June 9th. (May 5) Spring showers once again resulted in a cancellation of the racing action at Shady Bowl this evening.

(April 22) After three weeks of weather cancellations, the weather was great for our season opener with plenty of sunshine and warm temps. Fifteen cars made their first appearance at the Bowl for a night of fun and competition. Mechanical woe's took their toll early on in the evening, forcing several racers to sideline their cars prior to the main event, but 11 cars went on to give the fans a fast and exciting race. The 20-lap feature turned out to be a heated battle between the young charger Brandon Bayse and veteran Bill Hostetler. Bayse won this round in his Stoops Freightliner car, after a 6th place finish in the Late Model feature.

(April 10) Unseasonably cold weather resulted in the cancellation of Week One and Two of the 2007 OVDCA season at Shady Bowl Speedway.  The forecast is calling for warmer weather Saturday April 14th as the Dwarfs will again attempt to kick off the new season.

Welcome to the OVDCA's newest member, Don Bogar of Marion, Ohio, in car #11B (formerly the #4 owned by Max Evans and driven by Greg Watson).

(March 26) Donnie Eaton and Brandon Bayse represented the OVDCA in the recent Piqua Mall show.

(March 25) The OVDCA held its pre-season tech inspection this past Saturday.  The club would like to thank Brad and Jerry Damewood for allowing us the use of their facility ( Dingledine Trucking )

(March 16) The final 2007 Schedule has been posted including a new event, the Evans-Hostetler OVDCA Classic, an open competition race (OVDCA rules apply) honoring two men who have had a tremendous impact on the sport of Dwarf/Classic Modified racing in Ohio. Also, the 2007 Rulebook has been updated to reflect several minor clarifications.  REMINDER - the pre-season tech inspection is just one week away and the first race of the season is two weeks away!

(March 9) OVDCA Tech Director Jack Van Dyke has written an article for potential racers considering purchasing a dwarf car. Click HERE to view the article.

(March 5) The 2007 Rulebook has been posted on the RULES page.

(February 26) MCR and the OVDCA have agreed to co-sanction the Great Lakes Asphalt Series (GLAS) East West Shootout at Plymouth Speedway (http://www.plymouthspeedway.net/) in Indiana on May 26th.  The Memorial Day Weekend special at the 3/8th mile asphalt track will feature Late Models and fireworks in addition to the finest asphalt Dwarfs in the Midwest.  Two additional dates have been added to the Shady Bowl schedule, for a total of 21 OVDCA race dates at the DeGraff oval.

(February 25) Please visit the SCHEDULE page for a tentative 2007 race schedule for the OVDCA Dwarf's at Shady Bowl Speedway.  The club has secured 20 race dates beginning in March and running through October.

(January 31) Pre-Season Inspection & Opening date - The OVDCA has scheduled a pre-season car inspection for Saturday March 24th. The inspection will be held at the warehouse of Damewood Trucking Co. 1000 Phoenix Dr. Urbana Ohio 43078 from 10 AM till noon. All cars racing with the OVDCA at Shadybowl in 2007 will have to pass an inspection for rules compliance and safety and is our hope and intention to try to inspect as many cars as possible at this time to reduce delays at the track on a scheduled race night. To locate from St Rt. 68 & St Rt 55 drive west on St Rt 55 to Phoenix Dr. Turn Rt, (north) on Phoenix Dr. to Damewood Trucking, (Last Bldg on the left). The 2007 race schedule is incomplete at this time but the opening date for the OVDCA at Shadybowl is March 31st. one week after the inspection date!

(January 25) The OVDCA will be holding a pre-season car inspection prior to the opening of the race season. This will be a great time to assure that all cars conform to the rules and safety requirements. All cars "MUST" pass an inspection prior to competing in the 2007 race season and time constraints do not allow for large scale inspections at the track on race night so we hope that as many as possible take advantage of this early opportunity to have their cars checked before the first race night. Failure to pass the inspection could result in a car not being allowed to participate until some or all infractions are corrected.  We will be posting the date and location of the inspection in the next few weeks, please check back for complete details.

The OVDCA Board of Directors have appointed a "Tech committee" for the 2007 race season and they are planning regular safety and technical inspections on race nights during the race season to assure that all cars are legal and that safety requirements are met or exceeded. We hope that these efforts will keep the sport on an equal level for all participants and that our sport will be as safe as possible for those that are involved. Your cooperation with this process and the committee will be appreciated and is in the best interest of all involved.

Details pertaining to this notice as well as the 2007 race schedule will be updated and posted on this site in the next several weeks, please check back on a regular basis.

2007 OVDCA Board of Directors: Jerry Damewood, Brent Williams, Bob Bayse, Rob Dutra and Jack Van Dyke

The MCs for the evening, Max Evans and Greg Watson, began by thanking the staff and track crew of Shady Bowl Speedway, whose efforts allow our members to compete on Saturday nights.  Track owners Charlie and Lisa Stapleton, and track announcer/photographers Earl and Peggy Issacs were in attendance and received gifts from the club as a token of our appreciation.  Brent Williams received a special plaque recognizing his contributions in providing t-shirts to the members and fans at no cost to the club for the past two years.  Joe Edinger ("Joe's Can Do") was thanked for providing heat race and GLAS trophies throughout the season.  Brad Damewood was recognized for calculating the points following each race.  The club shared its appreciation for the efforts of Lee Van Dyke, who handles the pill draw, lineups and payouts each race, and Jack Van Dyke, OVDCA Competitive Director, for his many contributions.  Driver Participation plaques were presented to the drivers in attendance who finished outside of the top five, including Bill Hostetler, Randy Damewood, Greg Honaker, Charlie Luper, Todd Hare, Jerry Damewood, Greg Watson, and Max Evans.  Trophies were presented to Rob Dutra, Brent Williams and Bob Basye for finishing fifth through third.  A Rookie of the year plaque was also presented to Dutra, who led Chris Woodward and Cory Barcus in the rookie standing out of 11 first year drivers.  Co-champions Basye and Fitzpatrick then received their trophies and Goodyear jackets provided by Larry Robinson Enterprises, our local Goodyear distributor.  Max then led a spirited auction over an award winning  OVDCA collage created from photos from the 2006 season by Lee Van Dyke.  Bidding came down to Bill Hostetler and Charlie Stapleton, with Bill offering the winning bid of $250, with proceeds going to the club.  A decision was made by club board members to utilize remaining club funds in a door prize drawing limited to the drivers in attendance, with Cory Barcus the big winner of the $150 first prize drawing, and Brandon Basye taking the $100 second prize drawing.  In all, over $600 was given away, along with additional Goodyear merchandise provided by Robinson Enterprises, including a very nice winter Goodyear coat that went to Brent Williams.  To wrap up the evening and set the stage for 2007, Shady Bowl track owner Charlie Stapleton announced that he would award two new Goodyear tires to the winner of the '07 rookie of the year, and track announcer Earl Issacs offered to add $100 to the 2007 GLAS race if it would be renamed in honor of Bill Hostetler and Max Evans, who have, and continue to, give so much of their time and effort to help every member of the club perform at the best of their ability.   Photos captured by Earl Issacs and Jack Van Dyke will be posted to this site in the near future.
