2006 OVDCA Season in Review

Brandon Bayse and Wayne Fitzpatrick Share the 2006 Championship please scroll down for all the details

2006 Pictures

(October 7) The Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association wrapped up it's 2006 race season at Shady Bowl Speedway on Saturday, October 6th.  The evening started with three drivers within 18 points of each other, all with a chance to win the Points championship on the last night. Bob Basye held the lead by 10 points lead over Wayne Fitzpatrick's #2 car and the #44 car of Brandon Basye followed Wayne by 8 points. Heat one saw #98 Donnie Eaton take the early lead and appeared to be running away for an easy win.  #8 Chris Woodward gave chase, working his way through early traffic, then spent several laps on Eaton's tail.  The final lap was a drag race between the two cars, with Woodward just edging Eaton at the line.  Heat two featured Jerry Damewood and Bill Hostetler on the front row, with all three of the points race contenders buried deep in the field.  At the green flag Fitzpatrick drove over the rear wheel of Greg Watson causing both cars to spin, with Brad Damewood getting caught up in the melee.  Watson was done for the night with a bent rearend housing.  Brandon Basye made quick work of the field at the restart, passing Hostetler for the win, while uncle Bob finished third, and Fitzpatrick working his way back to fourth from the tail. Several attempts were made to start the main event, as contact eliminated Jerry Damewood and Corey Barkus.  Once the green flew Bill Hostetler jumped into the early lead a began to pull away from Fitzpatrick, whose engine developed a noticeable misfire.  Bob and Brandon Basye were working their way through the pack, with Brandon using an outside line to pass Fitzpatrick and set his sights on Hostetler.  Running fourth and setting his sights on the struggling Fitzpatrick, Bob Basye evening turned into a disaster his #1A car oiled down the track, ending his night and title hopes. Track favorite Bill Hostetler in only his second outing of the year reestablished his lead once the cleanup was complete with Brandon Basye giving chase. Despite the slick track conditions Basye continued to use the high line to challenge Hostetler, with the two running side-by-side for several laps.  Hostetler's car lost traction for  an instant exiting the second turn, and that's all Basye needed to take the lead with four laps remaining.  Hard charging rookie Rob Dutra had passed Fitzpatrick for third on lap 12, and was able to pass Hostetler with one lap remaining to take the second position. Fitzpatrick managed to hold off a late effort by Max Evans to hold onto fourth place for the night, followed by Evans, Brad Damewood, Donny Eaton, Charlie Luper, Chris Woodward, Rick Pinson, Greg Honaker, and newcomer Chad Kennedy in his first race.

Pending final conformation and checking all tabulations for the season we have a tie for the points championship - Brandon Basye and Wayne Fitzpatrick will share the title of Co-Champions for the 2006 season with Bob Basye finishing third, 2005 Rookie of the year Brent Williams in fourth place and Rookie Rob Dutra completing the top five positions for the year. These placings are unofficial.  All in all it was an exciting finish to a great season for all OVDCA Members.  Check back for additional results and a complete listing of the point standings later this week.

(September 9) Basye Victorious in Great Lakes Asphalt Series Race

Rain showers spoiled two earlier attempts to get in the 2006 edition of the Great Lakes Asphalt Series race, a co-promotion between the Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association and the Midwest Classic Racers of Michigan.  Skies finally cleared on September 9th, and despite the competition from the Ohio State/Texas football game, a strong field of cars was in attendance as well as a supportive grandstand crowd.  Shady Bowl promoter Charlie Stapleton showed his appreciation of the Dwarf cars by offering an enhanced purse of over $2000 for the event, and Norman Racing Products of Arizona and Trailer Whiz of Springfield, Ohio offered merchandise certificates for participants.

MCR member Jeff Slayton made the trip south to Shady Bowl for a second time, and was joined by Roger Balcom.  Cleveland area racer Mike Weisberg also made a return visit, but unfortunately had a short night as a result of transmission problems.  Two first-timers participated in the event, Lou Thomas of Bowling Green, and Rick Pinson, driving for Jack Morgan Jr.  Morgan's #11 is very familiar to the OVDCA club members, having previously been campaigned by Jack's father Jack Morgan Sr, and driven by area racing legend Dick Dunlevy Sr..  Both Pinson and Thomas had strong debuts, finishing 12th and 13th respectively in the 20 car feature.  Of additional interest to Shady Bowl fans was the return of Bill Hostetler, sidelined prior to the 2006 season with health concerns.

Heat race one featured a heated battle between front row starters Balcom, Donnie Eaton,  and the ever improving Rob Dutra, while Wayne Fitzpatrick fought his way from the back of the grid.  Eaton had his strongest run of the year, holding off Fitzpatrick for several laps before ending in the fourth position.

Heat two featured another strong performance from Brandon Bayse, leading his uncle Bob, and Bill Hostetler to the stripe.  Brandon was pulling double duty on the night, racing in the Late Model division as well.

A six car invert pill placed Fitzpatrick and Hostetler on the front row, with Bayse lurking in the outside row three starting position.  After a yellow on the start, the remainder of the race ran green to checkered, with Fitzpatrick leading the first ten laps, then Bayse taking command the rest of the way.  Fitzpatrick held onto the second spot over Rob Dutra in a strong run, with Hostetler taking fourth in his return to the asphalt, ahead of Balcom.  The remainder of the top ten included Bob Bayse, Jeff Slayton, and after a torrid battle featuring frequent passing, Brent Williams came out ahead of Max Evans and Greg Watson.

The 2006 OVDCA points standing show Bob Bayse with a slim 6 point lead over Wayne Fitzpatrick, with Brandon Bayse close behind with two races remaining in the season.

(August 27) The second time was not the charm as thunderstorms hit the GLAS race scheduled at Shady Bowl Speedway this week just before heat races were to begin.  Special thanks go to our sponsors for the race, Norman Race Products of Arizona (www.normanraceproducts.com) who provided a $100 gift certificate to the winner and additional certificates to be awarded to other contestants.  Joe's Can Do Auto Service sponsored the trophies for the top five finishers.  OVDCA member Brent Williams once again provided special GLAS race t-shirts to all participants.

The OVDCA returns to action at Shady Bowl on Sept. 9th.

(August 6)The Ohio Valley Dwarf cars took to the high banked asphalt oval at Shady Bowl for the eleventh time this season with seventeen cars making the show. First heat action saw the 36h coupe of London Ohio's Todd Hare, crashing into the back stretch wall after contact with the #28 car of Charlie Luper. This put Todd on the hook and out of action for the night. When racing resumed it was first time Dwarf racer, Dave Nagel taking charge and leading to the checkered with Chris Woodward chasing close behind.

Heat #2 saw a good field of fast cars all set and ready for action and there was plenty of that. Pole setter Brent Williams lead the way early with Bob & Brandon Basye charging hard from their row 2 & 3 starting positions. Meanwhile back in the pack, defending 2005 champion Wayne Fitzpatrick struggled with mechanical problems for the second week in a row. Brandon Basye moved past his Uncle Bob and cruised to an easy victory with only one late caution for a spin by Rob Dutra, it was a very fast heat.

The Feature got off to a hot start with Fitzpztrick curing his mechanical ill's only to suffer a flat left front tire in a lap one scuffle with the #28 car of Charlie Luper, but continuing to race on. Current points leader Bob Basye took the lead with Brent Williams,  Brad Damewood and Dave Nagel in fast pursuit with Brandon Basye charging from mid pack to join in the action. A blown engine ended the night for Nagel, doing double duty with his regular late model ride.  One caution for a Rob Dutra spin was the only break in action, with Brandon Basye capturing the lead about lap seven and never looking back, winning his second in a row and his fifth for the season, closing to within 36 points of his uncle and current points leader Bob Basye who finished second.  Williams took third, while Fitzpatrick held on for fourth.  Greg Watson worked his way forward from the twelfth starting spot to take advantage of the late caution passing Brad Damewood and Chris Woodward for fifth.

(February 27) OVDCA member Jack Morgan has placed his '34 Ford Torgerson car for sale.  Contact Jack at TSM520@aol.com.

(January 26) Shady Bowl Speedway (http://www.shadybowl.com/schedule/) has posted its 2006 schedule, including the dates during which the OVDCA will be competing.  Visit our Schedule page for more details.

(January 21) The OVDCA driver roster continues to grow, as Josh Luper of Indiana has purchased a Dwarf truck from Missouri and has indicated that he will compete on a regular basis at Shady Bowl Speedway on a regular basis.  OVDCA 2005 Rookie of the Year Brent William's son Jesse has also purchased a car making the Williams a two car operation for 2006.

Shady Bowl's 2006 schedule is expected to be released soon, check back frequently for the OVDCA dates which will be posted on our Schedule page.

(December 13) OVDCA president Max Evans recently met with Shady Bowl promoter Charlie Stapleton, and successfully negotiated a 21-date race schedule for 2006.  The agreed upon dates result in no more than one week off in any month, avoiding the lengthy mid-summer hiatus that occurred in previous years.  Shady Bowl is expected to post a tentative 2006 schedule on their website (www.shadybowl.com) early next year.  Club leaders are also working with the Midwest Classic Racers (MCR) Michigan-based Dwarf club to finalize dates for the Great Lakes Asphalt Series races, and are evaluating the feasibility of additional co-sanctioned events on dates when the OVDCA is not on the Shady Bowl schedule.  Stay tuned for more details!

(November 30) The OVDCA welcomes new member Rob Dutra who recently purchased Bob Stewart's #35 Pro Chassis. Brad Damewood's uncle Randy also purchased a car, making Damewood Racing a three car operation. We also hear that long-time member Roger Geer has plans to bring out his #17 next season.

During the off-season the club frequently receives inquires from individuals who have never raced but are interested in starting.  If you are one of these individuals, the following are some points you may wish to consider:

Low startup costs - starter cars are available now for $2K to $5K.  Pretty reasonable amount compared to most other classes that offer comparable speed and safety.
Lots of new drivers - The current OVDCA driver roster reflects nearly half of the current drivers have raced less than a full season.  Anyone joining now would not be far behind the pack in terms of experience.
Sport for all ages - right now the drivers' ages range from 14 to 72 including a 14 year old rookie and a 65 year old rookie.
Chance to be competitive - racing provides great opportunity to compete in an action sport and get the adrenaline pumping again.  If you think it's neat to watch you will love actually doing it.
Two heats are run each race including one heat of lesser experienced drivers so that everyone has a chance to race competitively each time at the track
A good group of individuals make up club membership all of whom are willing to help their fellow drivers
