The OVDCA will run it's last event of the season Saturday Oct. 8 at the Bowl, guest are welcome, Pits open at 3, racing at 7:PM

(September 21) IMPORTANT NOTICE: Shadybowl Speedway has given the OVDCA another race date to make up for our canceled race from Sept. 10 due to the electrical problems at the track. The OVDCA has been added to the schedule for the final race of the track's 2005 season on Oct. 8th. We will run our last points event on the previously scheduled October 1st race date.

(September 14)) Congratulations to Jon Wylie, 2005 Midwest Classic Racing (MCR) champion.  The Michigan area dwarf club also recognized Eric Hoffman for his runner-up finish.  The remainder of the top five included Rob Roney, Jeff Slayton, and Roger Balcomb.

MCR's final race of the season was held on September 10th at New Paris Speedway in Indiana, with OVDCA members Bob Basye and Brent Williams participating after Shady Bowl's cancellation.  Both earned top ten finishes, with Bob in 6th and Brent taking the 8th spot.

Former OVDCA competitor Jeff Staggers moved to the modified class several years ago, and just recorded his most successful season in the class, finishing 2nd in points at Muskingum Speedway outside of Zanesville, Ohio.

The OVDCA was recently made aware of the passing of Marvin Sweazy.  Marvin was a long-time car owner in the club, fielding cars for drivers such as Ray Leslie, Greg Watson and Bob Miller.  A colorful character known for his unique perspective and quirky stories, Marvin will be missed by many.

(September 10)A major problem with the tracks electrical service has forced the cancellation of the scheduled racing program Saturday (9/10) at Shady Bowl Speedway. “The recent disaster in our countries gulf area has caused a shortage of utility parts locally. The best guess we could get for the parts and repairs is early next week” stated track owner Charlie Stapleton.

(September 3) The weatherman gave Shady Bowl Speedway fans a great night of racing Saturday September 3rd with six divisions of stock cars doing battle on the tight three tenths mile oval. The winners included Brandon Bayse in the OVDCA Dwarf cars.  The Covington Ohio driver took advantage of his pole starting position to lead every lap of the Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association event. Bayse held off a late race charge by Wayne Fitzpatrick to put his Piqua Transfer Supply sponsored coach in victory lane for the second time in 2005. Bob Bayse was third, with Bill Hostetler fourth and Greg Watson fifth. Fitzpatrick and Williams carried heat win checkers.

Basye Streaks To OVDCA Labor Day Victory

(by Shawn Sell) Brandon Basye was the most recent winner in OVDCA action at Shady Bowl Speedway, as the Covington, Ohio-based young gun roared to the checkered flag first in Labor Day weekend action at the southwest Ohio speed plant.  Basye’s triumph was far from easy as he battled points leader Wayne Fitzpatrick from flag-to-flag.

Basye took off from his pole starting spot to lead all 20 laps and secure his second win of the season.  Fitzpatrick continued his strong campaign by finishing second, ahead of Bob Basye in his first night in the Jaxports ride previously owned by Larry Janney.  Bill Hostetler made a frantic drive through the field to place fourth, with Greg Watson doing the same to come home fifth.

The outset of the event saw the Basyes paired on the front row for the start.  Action was quickly halted as newcomer Tom Summers in just his second dwarf car drive, spun hard into the front stretch wall.  When the debris was cleared, action resumed in what would prove to be an uninterrupted green flag run to the checkered.

As the caution-free laps clicked off, Brandon Basye and Fitzpatrick broke off from the rest of the pack.  Lapped traffic proved difficult for many of the front runners to navigate, leading to change in positions throughout the race.  Brent Williams was turning in one of his best runs of the year early on as he held down the fourth position until getting passed by Hostetler on lap 12.

Another driver on the move was Watson who was forced to start 12th after a sixth-place finish in his heat.  Armed with a rebuilt motor in his Max Evans-owned ride, Watson followed Hostetler through the field, finally unseating Williams late in the going to take a top-five finish.

Chasing the top-five across the line were Williams who placed sixth and Evans who encountered bad luck in lapped traffic and finished seventh.  The father-son team of Jerry and Brad Damewood were eighth and ninth, with racing veteran Donnie Eaton rounding out the top-10.

Williams showed he would be a force in the evening’s preliminary action, scoring the win in the first heat race.  The Urbana, Ohio driver moved past Jerry Damewood on lap five to pick up the checkered.  The elder Damewood held on for second, with Brad Damewood taking the final redraw position for the feature.

Bob Basye took off from the pole position in heat number two leading the field for one lap, before giving way to Fitzpatrick.  Brandon Basye also slipped by his uncle on lap two, but couldn’t chase Fitzpatrick down at the checkered.  Bob Basye held on for third in the final prelim.

The OVDCA season is down to just two races, with the final points paying event set for this Saturday at Shady Bowl.  The curtain comes down on 2005 on Oct. 1 in a non-points show at the Bowl.

Heat 2: Fitzpatrick, Br. Basye, Bo. Basye, Evans, Hostetler, Watson.

(August 31) In OVDCA action at Shady Bowl Speedway on August 27th, it was once again Bill Hostetler of West Liberty finishing first in his Trenor Motors truck. Brandon Bayse was second, with Wayne Fitzpatrick third, Bob Bayse fourth and Brent Williams fifth.

(August 27) Hostetler Victorious Again

Defending OVDCA champion Bill Hostetler notched another feature win Saturday night in an effort to cut into 2003 Champion Wayne Fitzpatrick's points lead, But Fitzpatrick managed to race his IBEW sponsored sedan from the tail to a third place finish to hold on to his lead. With two more points events to go for the season, Fitzpatrick will need strong finishes to hold onto the lead.  The OVDCA Dwarf cars will take to the high banks of Shadybowl Saturday Sept. 3 and again Sept 10th. for the final two points races. The last race of the year will be Oct. 1st. and is not a points event.

(August 6) GLAS Win to Hostetler

(by Shawn Sell) Since the inception of the Great Lakes Asphalt Series (GLAS) in 2002, Bill Hostetler has made a habit of running up front during the events at Shady Bowl Speedway.  The 2005 edition of the Shady Bowl GLAS race was no exception, as the ageless speedster raced his way to victory over an 18-car field on August 6.

The win was far from easy for Hostetler, despite leading all 20 laps around the tight 3/10 mile oval.  Brandon Basye gave Hostetler a heated challenge for all 20 circuits, but he had to settle for second as Hostetler won his fourth GLAS feature in five tries at the southwest Ohio speed plant.

Hostetler and Michigan’s Jeff Slayton were paired on the front row for the start of the main event after OVDCA rookie Brent Williams scratched with mechanical woes.  Hostetler quickly jumped into the lead with Basye taking second from his number three starting position.  Slayton settled into third, while defending GLAS Shady Bowl winner Rob Roney took over fourth after getting by Eric Giles on lap three.

The field was slowed multiple times in the first half of the feature for minor spins, but all 17 cars were able to keep going.  Up front, Basye challenged Hostetler to no avail as Roney and Wayne Fitzpatrick pressured the top two.  In fifth place, Bob Basye was enjoying one of the best runs of his career, as he was engaged in a battle with John Miller in the Chuck Engler owned ride.

The standings remained much the same until lap 14 when Fitzpatrick used lapped traffic to his advantage to sweep into third place.  The most serious incident of the night occurred on lap 16 when Slayton, running fourth at the time, got together with rookie Corey Barcus in turn two.  The ensuing tangle took both cars into the infield, with Slayton’s ride coming to rest on top of Barcus’ left front.

A strong run came to a disappointing end for Bob Basye just two laps from the checkered as his gas tank ran dry, forcing him from the event.  The yellow would fly for the seventh and final time on the event’s last counter as Roger Balcom came to a stop in turn one.  That set the stage for a one lap shootout and Hostetler proved up to the task as he held Brandon Basye off for the win.  Behind the front running pair, Roney made a bold move around Fitzpatrick coming to the stripe that saw wheels touch and smoke fly, but no damage to either ride.  Roney ended up third, with Fitzpatrick right behind and Miller rounding out the top-five.

The top-five finishers, who all received trophies courtesy of the OVDCA, were chased across the line by Larry Dolbee in a strong sixth, along with Max Evans, Giles and Jim Monst.  Rookie Jerry Damewood rounded out the top-10 as the last driver on the lead lap.

The evening’s field was paired into three heat races, with Roney and Fitzpatrick dominating the first two preliminaries.  In the opener, Roney jumped into the lead from the pole position, pulling away from the remainder of the six-car field.  Williams ended up second at the line, with Dolbee grabbing the final redraw position.

Heat number two was a flag-to-flag win for Fitzpatrick, with Slayton moving around Giles for second on lap four.  The latter, a rookie with the OVDCA this season, hung on for third.  The final tune-up provided a preview for the feature as Hostetler held off the advances of Brandon Basye for the win.  Balcom took third, just in front of Bob Basye.

The event at Shady Bowl concludes the GLAS schedule for the 2005 season.  The OVDCA still has four events at Shady Bowl remaining on its docket, with the next coming on August 27.

Heat 1: Roney, Williams, Dolbee, J. Damewood, Monst, Hare.

(July 9) In Shady Bowl Speedway action on July 9th, Marengo Ohio's Wayne Fitzpatrick won his second straight feature event in his Robson's Marathon coach bodied car. Bill Hostetler was the runner up, with Greg Watson, Brandon Bayse and Eric Giles rounding out the top five. Giles and Hostetler were heat car victors. (Shawn Sell) Fitzpatrick Roars To Second OVDCA Win.

Two-time series champion Wayne Fitzpatrick made it two features wins in a row as he took the checkered flag first in the latest OVDCA event held on July 9 at Shady Bowl Speedway.  Fitzpatrick overcame a 10th-starting position to claim the win in the 20-lap affair.

Fitzpatrick roared past Bill Hostetler on lap six then set sail for the checkered, topping Hostetler by a sizable margin.  The ageless veteran held on for second, ahead of Greg Watson and Brandon Basye.  Rookie Eric Giles turned in a career-best run, finishing fifth.

Bringing the 15-car field to the green was the father-son duo of Jerry and Brad Damewood.  Shady Bowl flagman Mike Stapleton quickly waved off the start, however, giving Jim Monst his spot back when he spun in turn one. When order was restored, Giles moved into the lead from his inside row two starting position.  His time on the point was short lived, though as Hostetler moved into the top spot on lap two.  Giles was able to hang onto the runner-up spot until lap four, when Fitzpatrick took over the position.

As the leaders began to enter lapped traffic, Fitzpatrick was able to make what proved to be the winning move on the event’s sixth circuit.  Hostetler was forced to check up on the back stretch in front of a lapped car, while Fitzpatrick stayed in the gas and cleared both cars.  From there, he was never seriously challenged as he pulled away from Hostetler and the rest of the field.

Attrition struck the field just past halfway in the caution-free event, as both Brad Damewood and Mike Weisberg experienced mechanical woes.  Damewood was forced up the hill on lap 13, while Weisberg took a ride through the infield before coming to a stop on lap 14.

The best battle on the track was for third as Watson and Brandon Basye swapped the spot numerous times.  As the high-speed duo negotiated lapped traffic, Watson showed his experience, by holding off his younger adversary for the position.

The evening’s two heat races were lined up in a faster heat, slower heat format, with the OVDCA newcomers participating in the first prelim.  Interestingly, none of the eight competitors in the opening preliminary had competed in a dwarf car at Shady Bowl prior to this season.  Brad Damewood was on the pole for the start and it looked as he might score his first checkered flag in just his second outing.  Damewood led the first four laps, holding off the challenges of first Brent Williams, then Giles.  Giles finally took over the top spot on lap five, with Williams slipping into second on lap six.  Coming to the white flag, Giles and Williams touched battling for the lead, with the latter spinning into the infield, then retiring to the hill.  When the green came back out, Giles held onto the lead, in front of Brad and Jerry Damewood in the two and three slots.

Heat two was the Hostetler show as he led flag-to-flag for the victory.  Fitzpatrick jumped into second early and was able to hang onto the spot for the duration.  Watson overcame a sixth starting position to take third.

The OVDCA will be back in action at Shady Bowl when it hosts the Great Lakes Asphalt Series on Saturday, August 6.  The MCR version of the GLAS series will take place on July 23 at Owosso (Mich.) Speedway.

Heat 1: Giles, B. Damewood, J. Damewood, G. Monst, Feirl, Hare, Mead, Williams.

Heat 2: Hostetler, Fitzpatrick, Watson, Bo. Basye, J. Monst, Weisberg, Br. Basye.

Feature: Fitzpatrick, Hostetler, Watson, Br. Basye, Giles, J. Monst, Bo. Basye, Williams, Feirl, G. Monst, Hare, J. Damewood, Mead, Weisberg, B. Damewood.

(June 4) It was a good night for racing at the bowl on Saturday June 4th, as Senior statesman Bill Hostetler extended his winning ways by slipping past Wayne Fitzpatrick on lap 18 to capture yet another feature win. A field of 11 cars put on one of the best shows of the evening, going green to checkered, with a lot of action and wheel to wheel racing.  Max Evans and Wayne Fitzpatrick led the field to the green flag, with Fitzpatrick taking the point after several laps of two wide racing.  Brandon Bayse was lurking just behind in third, but was fighting a loose condition.  As Greg Watson's tires came in, he was able to make an inside move and take over third from Bayse.  Hostetler was making his march through the field, but was trapped behind Evans and Watson, who was using an outside line in his attempt to take over second from his teammate.  Lapped cars gave Hostetler an opening on the inside, and he quickly took over second and reeled in Fitzpatrick.  As laps wound down, Watson and Bayse found an opening in lapped traffic to slip by Evans, as Hostetler made his pass for the lead with two laps remaining.  Bob Bayse hustled the #6 car to a strong showing just behind the leaders, and newcomer Eric Giles continued to improve with a 7th place finish, after struggling with handling woes last week.  Making only their second appearances at the Bowl, OVDCA rookies Danewood, Monst and Hare experienced much better luck this weekend, overcoming the mechanical gremlins that plagued them in their first outing.  Special thanks goes to Brent Williams, who is providing 20+ OVDCA shirts which are given away to the Shady Bowl fans prior to the feature.

(June 1) (Shawn Sell)  West Liberty’s Bill Hostetler once again proved to be the class of the field in the Dwarf cars, as he easily won the 20-lap feature in his Trenor Motors coach. Brandon Bayse. Wayne Fitzpatrick, Max Evans and Brent Williams finished second thru fifth.  Hostetler and Bob Bayse were heat winners.  The Classic Modified Dwarf Cars will return to the Bowl for the next two weekends.

(May 28) Hostetler Dominates OVDCA Field

(Shawn Sell) The ageless Bill Hostetler raced to feature win number two of the 2005 season, scoring the win in dominating fashion in an OVDCA event at Shady Bowl Speedway on May 28.  A season-high 13 cars signed in to compete in the Memorial Day weekend event, with the field comprised of a mix of newcomers and regular faces.

Hostetler led all but one circuit in the 20-lap main event, outdistancing a hard charging Brandon Basye to secure the victory.  Wayne Fitzpatrick finished third with Max Evans and Brent Williams rounding out the top five.

Joining the OVDCA regulars for the event were former 35 Raceway Park competitors Todd Hair and Gene Monst, along with Urbana resident Jerry Danewood in the car previously owned by Mike Rector.  Former OVDCA regular and rookie of the year Josh Sell was also on hand, making a special appearance in the Bob Stewart-owned #35 car.

Pacing the field to the green at the outset of the feature were Bob Basye and Eric Giles, with Basye jumping into the early lead.  Three caution flags flew in the early going, with attrition knocking Sell, Monst and Danewood out prematurely.  When racing finally got underway, Bob Basye jumped into the early lead, before giving up the spot to Hostetler on lap two.  Fitzpatrick quickly moved into the number two spot as the field settled in.

The car on the move through the early stages was Brandon Basye, who rolled off 10th after scoring the win in the OVDCA’s previous event.  The younger of the Basye’s moved past his uncle on lap five and began applying pressure to Fitzpatrick.  Brandon Basye finally worked past Fitzpatrick on lap 13, but still held a sizable deficit to Hostetler.  The balance of the top five showed Greg Watson running fourth, with Evans holding down fifth.

The fourth and final caution of the night flew on lap 16 when Giles’ car showed a shower of sparks following a broken muffler.  Bob Basye and Watson were also forced to the pits, with the latter suffering from electrical woes.

Once racing resumed, Hostetler again opened up his advantage and was able to keep Basye at bay for the remaining five laps.  Fitzpatrick and Evans chased the high-flying duo across the line, with Williams the last car running in a career-best fifth.  Watson was scored in sixth place, just ahead of Giles, Bob Basye, Sell and Monst rounding out the top-10.

Attrition struck the field early as Hair suffered from a blown motor in practice.  When racing got underway in the first heat, Williams showed as the leader on lap one, before Bob Basye blew by into the lead.  The yellow flew on lap six as Donnie Eaton’s motor exploded in a cloud of smoke on the front stretch.  Caution came out again before another lap could be completed when Giles and Williams got together in turn two, with the latter forced from the event.  At the restart, Basye regained control, holding off Giles and Monst for his first career heat win.

Heat number two paired teammates Evans and Watson on the front row and it was the former jumping into the early lead.  Evans led the first three circuits, before giving way to Hostetler on lap four.  Hostetler led the final five laps, holding off Evans and Brandon Basye for the checkered flag.

The OVDCA will be back in action each of the next two weekends (June 4 and June 11) at Shady Bowl.  The pit gates open at 3 p.m. each Saturday, with practice beginning at 4 and racing at 7.  Sell, the 2000 OVDCA Rookie of the Year, is scheduled to kick off his second season of the Hardee’s Summer Shootout at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C. on June 14.  A senior to be at UNC-Charlotte, Sell will pilot the school’s #49 legends car in the semi-pro division for the second consecutive year.

(May 14) Shady Bowl Speedway’s scheduled racing program was cancelled due to inclement weather Saturday (5/14). It marked the fourth rain or snow out of the season for the track and the third on the OVDCA's schedule, after getting in the first two races of the season in April.  The OVDCA will return to action at Shady Bowl on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday May 28th.

(April 30) Shady Bowl Speedway promoter Charlie Stapleton announced early Saturday morning that the scheduled racing program for Saturday night (4/30) had been cancelled due to wet grounds and a forecast of cold night time temperatures. The cancellation was the third of the season for the Champaign County oval.

Attention - Dwarf Car Owners Looking to Sell Cars: The beginning of a new season has brought a dramatic increase in the interest in Classic Modified Dwarf Car racing at Shady Bowl.  There are a number of interested buyers seeking moderately priced Pro Chassis and Jaxport rollers and race ready cars.  Over the years a significant number of cars have been sold in the Ohio area that are no longer appearing at race tracks. If you have a car in the garage that you don't plan to race, contact the OVDCA at 614-847-9532 and let us help you turn that car into cash, while providing the opportunity for new racers get valuable seat time on an asphalt track.  Prospective Drivers - Join new OVDCA members Brent Williams, Eric Giles and Rob Kite in hitting the race track in the economical and fast Dwarf car class.  Contact the OVDCA to find out more.

(April 23) Rain, snow, sleet or hail won’t stop the US Mail, but it sure will play havoc with auto racing. The weatherman had issued a forecast with a smorgasbord of all the above items for Saturday, plus record cold temperatures forcing Shady Bowl Speedway to cancel its racing program.  This Saturday night ( 4/30) the Bowl will host a regular program of Late Model, Modified, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Compacts and Ohio Valley Dwarf Cars. It will also be Dayton Auto Racing Fan Club night, with all members admitted free to the grandstand area. Gates will open at 3, with time trials at 5 and racing at 7.

(April 16) Covington OH driver Brandon Bayse won the 20-lap Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association feature in his Piqua Transfer backed coach. The win was the first ever for the youngster who shows marked improvement each week. Brandon battled past Max Evans and Wayne Fitzpatrick from his 3rd starting spot, while Bill Hostetler was stuck behind a side-by-side battle being waged by Greg Watson and Mike Rector.  Hostetler's hope for a charge through the field was cut short when a flat tire during a yellow for an Eric Giles spin put him into the infield for the remainder of the night.  Wayne Fitzpatrick, Max Evans, Greg Watson and Mike Rector rounded out the top five at the checkered. Max “The Ole Man From The Cave” Evans won the heat race.
