1994 OVDCA Season in Review

The 1994 season has resulted tremendous growth for the dwarf car class in the Midwest. The Ohio Valley Dwarf Car Association has been a big part of this growth. In only the first year of existence in Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky, OVDCA now boasts a membership of over twenty competitors, and has a strong record of providing exciting, competitive and affordable racing.

The season kicked off in January with an exhibition at the first annual Midget Car Racing Classic, at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. This indoor event drew over 8,000 spectators, providing many with their first exposure to dwarf car racing. Toledo area driver Mike Hicks was victorious in the feature event. Special thanks goes to Ken Rice, the promoter of the event for the invitation and the excellent coverage in the event program.

OVDCA members John Hammons, Kelly Moore and Greg Watson participated in indoor events promoted by the Midwest Dwarf Car Association based in Evansville, Indiana. These shows included Fort Wayne, Cleveland, and Battlecreek (Michigan).

The season began at 35 Raceway in late April. Early participants included Hammons, Moore, Watson, Buddy McBride, Gary Salyer, Dale Evans, Randy Robertson, and Jim Ruckman. Although the field was small at the time, these racers gave 35 Raceway fans an idea of the excitement that the dwarf cars could provide. Hammons and McBride established themselves as the drivers to beat during these initial events. As the season progressed, Gary Salyer came on strong, winning a number of mid-season events.

Kelly Moore overcame a string of engine related problems to become a strong contender, and an engine switch and additional race experience for Jim Ruckman turned the #59 car a frontrunner. During this time the field was joined by new dwarf car racers Bobby Pennock, Shawn Rentmeester, Kirk Claypool, Larry Miller, Steve Kerns, Spence Sterns, Jack Morgan, Chad Pendleton and Bo Wiley. Special appearances by Phoenix area Dwarf Car Company owner John Cain and Dwarf Car Unlimited owner Frank Davis from North Carolina added to 35 Raceway's shows. McBride's consistent performances kept him atop the point standings.

Special events were scheduled during the season, including Twin Cities Speedway in North Vernon (Indiana) which saw twelve OVDCA members compete with the Midwest Dwarf Car Assoc. regulars on the high banked 3/8 mile facility on the same bill as the USAC midgets. Midway Speedway in Crooksville was host to the dwarf cars in a Friday night event, with strong showings by Pennock and Salyer until rains cancelled the feature. Rains also washed out a scheduled event at Florence Speedway (Kentucky) that had drawn over twenty competitiors from Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. Thanks go to John Hammons for his efforts in organizing this show. Two events were held at Ohio Valley Speedway in Parkersburg, with McBride picking up the feature in the first race, and Ruckman winning the second feature. OVDCA members Moore, Hammons and Watson participated in a late season event at Bloomington (Indiana) Speedway, with Moore picking up a strong 3rd place finish, and Watson taking the 6th spot among some of the Midwest's best dwarf car drivers.

Several OVDCA members chose to travel beyond the Midwest, with Salyer, Ruckman, Watson and McBride competed in the $1,000 to win Pepsi Sponsored events in Tennessee. Robertson was a regular traveler with stops on the Small Wonders Association in Indiana, D.W.A.R.F. in Pennsylvania, and Jaxsport (Michigan) schedules. Robertson and Sterns turned in strong performances in the Jaxsport Nationals event.

The season wrapped up at 35 Raceway with a Nationals event held on September 20. Rains had postponed the event from an earlier date, and threatened again. In a race that saw rain showers, Power outages and fog, Kelly Moore was victorious in both heats and the feature, taking home the Nationals trophy and $425 in winnings.
