1993 OVDCA Season in Review

(The OVDCA was not officially established until 1994.  However, Buckeye Dwarf Car Company of Westerville, Ohio introduced the Dwarf Car Class to Ohio area race fans throughout the 1993 race season, laying the groundwork for the organization.  The Race Car Show at River Valley Mall in Lancaster, Ohio was the site of the first dwarf car display.

Buckeye Dwarf Car Company sold it’s first car to Erlanger, Kentucky racer John Hammons in July of 1993. Hammons, and Buckeye owner Greg Watson, displayed their Dwarfs cars at many area tracks including 35 Raceway, Portsmouth Raceway, Florence Speedway, Lawrenceburg Speedway, Columbus Motor Speedway, Shady Bowl Speedway, Crooksville Speedway, Mansfield Speedway.  The cars were also included in many car shows throughout the season.

The dwarfs were featured at Columbus Motor Speedway in June 1993 in a promotion with QFM96, a Columbus area radio station.  Afternoon disc jockey “Joe Show” and Sports guy Dave Johnston held a match race with two of Buckeye Dwarf Car’s cars, with the racing ending with Johnston blowing the motor and catching on fire!

The season ending Cave City Invitation in Kentucky brought together one of the largest Dwarf car fields in the Midwest to date, including Watson, Hammons, Dwarf Car Company owner John Cain, Kentucky dealers Bill & Lois Smith, Parkersburg dealer Gary Salyer and representatives from Greg Fuchs’ Indiana-based Dwarf Association.)

Cave City Invitational

Cave City, KY - Aug. 22, 1993 The new Cave City Speedway hosted a dwarf car invitational event featuring competitors from six states. The 1/4 mile clay facility located just north of the Mammouth Cave tourist area in Kentucky is owned by Dwarf Car Company dealers Bill & Lois Smith, and runs a full program of dwarf cars, mini-modifieds, and mini-stocks. Gary Lee and Larry Rice of ESPN's Saturday Night Thunder were on hand to participate, along with Dwarf Car Co. owner John Cain, from Arizona.

As expected, Larry Rice won the celebrity race, with Gary Lee second and John Hammons of Erlanger, KY a close third.

After a series of heat races, the cars were divided into to two features. Russ DeMoss of Madisonville, KY drove a consistent race, steadily pulling away for the win in the first feature. Hammons finished second after a tight battle with Brad Swindell of Indiana.

Showing the experience gained from ten years of dwarf car experience, John Cain easily pulled away from the field in the second feature.

The Cave City Invitational demonstrated the potential of the dwarf car class in the Midwest. With a 16 car field, races were competitive and exciting. Plans are in the works for similar events at other tracks. Please call 502-563-6751 for more information on the Cave City Speedway.

Lawrenceburg,IN - Aug 21, 1993 The dwarf cars were on display at the winged outlaw sprint car Summer Nationals at Lawrenceburg. Dwarf Car Company founder John Cain was the featured guest as four dwarf cars were displayed. Interestingly, the four were powered by a Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, & a Kawasaki. A short exhibit race was won easily by John Cain with John Hammons second. A special thanks goes to Mel Johnson for working in the dwarf cars on a busy night.

DWARF FRIENDLY TRACKS!

Buckeye Dwarf Car Co. is interested in developing an association for the purpose of promoting dwarf car racing in the Midwest. An increasing number of tracks have expressed an interest in adding dwarf cars to their weekly programs. All of us would like to see a competitive class at our local track. However, 8 to 12 cars are needed in order to put on a show for the promoter and the fans. In the interest of building car counts, and providing competitive shows, racers throughout the area must work together. By scheduling special races at featured tracks as a group, we will get the exposure necessary to develop a field of cars at each facility much sooner than working individually. The association can assist in contacting promotors, providing information, and attracting potential sponsors.

The following Ohio area tracks have committed to including dwarfs on a regular basis.

35 Raceway, Chillicothe
Toledo Speedway, Toledo
Skyline Speedway, Athens
Brown County Speedway, Russellville

Dwarf Appearances

Buckeye Dwarf Car Company recently participated in several events in order to expose dwarf cars to more potential racers. The 1993 Street Rod Nationals were held at the Ohio State Fairground. As entrant #11022, the dwarf car had plenty of company! It was great to see the interest generated by the car amid the $20,000+ street rods.

The American Motorcycle Assoc. held it's 1993 Vintage days show at the old Powell Speedway in Powell, Ohio. The dwarf car amazed many of the bike enthusists with it's creative use of stock motorcycle equipment.

Dwarf cars have also been shown at Florence (KY) Speedway, Skyline Speedway, and Ohio Valley Speedway (Parkersburg, WV) with several additional track appearances scheduled before the season ends.

Additional Race Dates

In addition to those previously named, the following tracks have scheduled dwarf car events:

9/18 Thunder Valley Raceway, Salem, IN

9/18 & 9/25 Flat Rock Speedway, Flat Rock, MI

TNN Slick 50 Nationals

The Nashville Network has just announced that Legends cars will be included in the Slick 50 Sprint Car series airing this fall & winter in Arizona. Although slightly different in format from the dwarfs, the Legends cars should generate tremendous interest for dwarf racing through this nationally televised series.
